An Introduction To Alternative Medicine Remedies

Alternative Medicine Remedies

Alternative Medicine Treatment Options:

Both patients and doctors have become increasingly interested in alternative medicine in recent years.  There is a great variety of types of treatments that fall outside the realm of conventional Western medicine, and many of them are being employed by traditional doctors in combination with their allopathic treatment.  It is not easy to summarize the types of alternative medicines, as they encompass so many different treatments.  However, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine has helped greatly in the general understanding of alternative and complementary medicine by categorizing them into five basic classifications.

Whole Medical Systems:

The broadest category is that of whole medical systems.  This encompasses any approach to treatment that has evolved entirely separately from traditional allopathic medicine.  Often these types of treatment are philosophically in opposition to conventional medicine, because they have been developed outside of conventional Western thought.  This group of alternative medicine types includes Ayurvedic medicine, homeopathy, naturopathy, traditional Chinese medicine, and Native American remedies.

Mind Body Methods:

Two other categories of alternative medicine are mind-body medicine and manipulative & body-based methods.  Mind-body medicine focuses on the mind's ability to heal physical symptoms; these alternative treatments believe that thought can heal physical ailments.  Included in this category are biofeedback, hypnosis, meditation, and yoga.  Manipulative and body-based methods are those that manipulate the body to address symptoms; in many of these methods, it would appear to a casual observer that the part of the body being manipulated is unrelated to the part suffering symptoms of illness.  These include acupressure, chiropractic, massage therapy, osteopathy, reflexology, and rolfing.

Biological and Energy Based Treatments:

The final two categories of alternative medicine are biologically-based and energy medicines.  Biologically-based medicines are those that rely on substances found in nature for healing or preventative treatment.  Included in this category are treatments using herbal remedies, vitamins, supplements, and natural remedies such as aloe or echinacea.  Energy medicines are perhaps the type of alternative treatments least accepted by many allopathic doctors.  These treatments follow the principle that disruptions in the body's energy field are the cause of illness; they seek to heal by restoring balance to the energy field.  Included in this category are acupuncture, qi gong, reiki, and healing touch.

Innovative Heart Therapies Trumping Needless Surgeries

By Werner Knoepp
Opinion and belief masquerading as science have always been a formidable adversary of progress in any of the scientific disciplines, but perhaps most notably, in medicine. Here, many new and effective therapies have been swept under the rug simply because they incite thought and, not insignificantly, threaten the profits of established practices. New and truly effective treatments have been unjustifiably labeled as worthless, dangerous, and quackery. As a result, those innovators in the alternative medicine community generally keep a low profile as they successfully treat cancer, psoriasis, arthritis, osteoporosis, heart disease, and countless other illnesses normally treated by conventional medicine with surgery, radiation, a lifetime of drugs, and other dangerous, debilitating, and grossly ineffective methods.
